Paperhand Puppet Intervention has been based out of Saxapahaw for years but have recently moved to their new studio and performance space in the Saxapahaw Community Center. The space gives Paperhand room to create the magnificent creatures -- "puppets" doesn't do justice to their evocative beauty -- that populate their productions and serve as a performance space and home base for the group; the first production there, "Hungry Ghost," was sold out in Saxapahaw!
"The special magic of Paperhand is not only the brilliance of its puppetry, but the creative energy, sense of community and spirit of good will that glow in its work." -News & Observer. Read more about Paperhand at http://www.paperhand.org/

The Hawbridge School is a four-year public charter high school that offers an enriched curriculum in Environmental Studies and the Arts with a focus on environmental stewardship as a problem of ethics. A highly accredited faculty teaches all courses needed for the North Carolina College, College Tech, and Career Prep diplomas, and weaves the state curriculum into five experiential and project-based interdisciplinary units each year that include frequent guest lecturers and school-wide field trips. For 2008-2009 those are: Democracy, Community, Education, Health, and Creativity.
The Hawbridge School has the tools and innovative curriculum that enable students to thrive and succeed: state-of-the-art computers and online courses; a wireless network; a photography lab and darkroom; canoeing and kayaking for PE; special programs on the environment, river stewardship and sustainable agriculture; exceptional art and music programs; and math and science courses taught by Ph.D.s. Our recently-completed science lab and the "outdoor classrooms" that surround the school and abound along the Haw River provide spaces for scientific research, conducted under the direction of Dr. Norma Johnson, science teacher, with the assistance of UNC-Chapel Hill's Institute for the Environment honor fraternity and Biology Department students.
Model School for the UNC-Chapel Hill Institute for the Environment and a North Carolina WILD Education Site.
